Unfortunately, polar ice has not only been shrinking in surface area over the last couple years, it has become younger and thinner as well. Throughout the above animation, Cryospheric scientist Dr. Walt Meier of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center will describe how the arctic sea ice has undergone fundamental changes during the era of satellite observation and measurement.
Note from the Editor: This visualization incorrectly identifies the oldest ice as being 5+ years old, when it would be more accurate to say 4+ years old.
